Bald Eagle vs Osprey.

We Weafers do a LOT of swimming in the lagoon and even out into Lily Bay, and so we often get to see things from a different perspective than some.

Last weekend my swimming friend Celine was visiting, and as we swam around Jenkins’ we stopped for a minute to chat. An immature bald eagle flew overhead, just about 25 feet above us. We could hear the wind in its feathers. It landed on a branch in one of Joan’s trees. Suddenly, an osprey flew over, squeaking all the way. It repeatedly dive bombed the eagle, again and again in a sharp V pattern. So much squeaking from them both. Behind us, a loon was floating and hooting the whole time, seemingly perturbed by the air battle above. Not sure who the look was rooting for but finally the eagle left and flew off toward Double Point until we couldn’t see it anymore. Osprey took off quietly, Loon dove down and was gone. We were pretty amazed right to have been right in the center of it all.

In all of my work, I seek the moments when ordinary people are at their most extraordinary, their most special, and most purely themselves. We can all relate to these average moments of magic and grace, of apartness and connectedness.
